Our third Annual Graduation ceremony was on March 18, hosted by the University of Hong Kong. It was an emotional and joyful event celebrating the achievements of 170 migrant domestic workers who have graduated from our financial and empowerment education programmes! In attendance were also supportive employers, funders, friends of the graduates and Enrich supporters.
The event kicked off with messages from Dr. Julie Ham (Dept. of Sociology, HKU) and Dr. Daisy Tam (Chair of the Board, Enrich), who welcomed the crowd and commended the graduates for their achievements.
Our keynote speaker, Arista Devi, a domestic worker, author and Resolve Foundation Social Justice Fellow, gave an inspirational speech sharing her experience of becoming an author and encouraging our graduates never to give up, even in the face of hardship.
Our graduates also received special messages from Hon. Antonio Morales, Consul General of the Philippine Consulate and Mr. Erwin M. Akbar, Consul (Socio-Cultural) of the Indonesian Consulate who congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to continue planning and saving for their futures.
Representatives from the graduating class also spoke on behalf of their class. Yani Bt Tarnu Waras (Zee) recounted her first time coming to an Enrich workshop, turning up two hours late and not being allowed to attend. She resolved to be punctual the next time and never looked back. She reminded the graduates to take pride in their achievements, continue learning and always walk the right path.
Wellmar Torres spoke about growing up in poverty and bearing the responsibility of financially supporting her family. Enrich’s workshops made a positive impact on her life by teaching her the value of money.
I am so thankful for Enrich classes — I learned a lot and was inspired to give importance to saving and good communication with my family about finances. I learned how to budget my money and save. I learned to speak up and to say NO when necessary especially about money matters and learn the procedure of many kinds of investment. – Wellmar Torres
The graduates also heard from Clara Kwan, an Enrich supporter and employer sponsor, who talked about how employers can inspire their friends to support their domestic workers through Enrich. The ceremony was closed by our Executive Director, Lucinda Pike, who reminded the graduates never to stop learning and pursuing their dreams.
Our Annual graduation finished off with a powerful rendition of our very own Enrich song, written by our staff and sung in both Bahasa Indonesia and English by the graduates. It was an emotional moment for everyone and a recognition of their hard work and achievement!
We are grateful to everyone who helped make this event happen: A big thanks to Dr. Julie Ham of The University of Hong Kong for hosting; our amazing Enrich Ambassadors who gave up their time on Sundays to help organise the ceremony, volunteers from Li Po Chun United World College, LUSH Hong Kong for providing gifts for our graduates, Corner Kitchen Cafe for the delicious dessert, and our supporters who sponsored refreshments and gifts.
